The most famous sculpture ever created, the Statue of David is a masterpiece crafted by the renowned Michelangelo. The Statue of David was a commission for the Cathedral of Florence, and work began in 1501 A.D. By 1504 David was finished. The massive 14 foot sculpture was placed outside in the Piazza della Signoria but was later moved indoors to prevent damage. The incredible Statue of David possesses so many astonishing qualities. For instance, David has often been sculpted in scenes of post battle with the Philistine giant Goliath. Michelangelo chose to pose his David in a scene before the battle. Just as well, Michelangelo posed his rendition of David in the famous contrapposto position. The way that he created a sense of movement in the stance brings to life the limbs of marble.
One of the irregular components of the statue is the oversized head and imposing right hand. Some people have speculated that this was to enunciate those extremities as the statue was intended to be placed up high. Any which way, the statue is truly a perfect creation.
