Augustus of Primaporta is a portrait of the famous emperor Caesar Augustus. Created in Rome, this elegant sculpture was finished in 20 B.C.E. and was made to commemorate Augustus’ power and monumental achievements. In his portrait, Augustus shows himself as a military victor, peacemaker, and associate of the gods. The lavish breastplate he wears symbolizes his achievements and status. The depictions of light gods Sol and Caelus shining on the female depictions of Augustus’ conquered lands symbolizes the era of peace he brings to his empire called the Pax Romana. The most intricate piece of the breast piece is that the artists included nipples on both sides of the chest.
In addition to the breast piece, the Cupid riding the dolphin near Augustus’ right foot symbolizes his great naval victories and association with the gods. Augustus’ adoptive father claimed to be descended from Venus, the Roman goddess of love. The dolphin represents his great naval victory against Mark Anthony and Cleopatra in 31 B.C.E.
This portrait of Augustus was found in his third wife's home in 1863 and was given the name “Augustus of Primaporta” thereafter. Do you think Augustus of Primaporta should be the next Sexiest Man Alive?
